San Juan de Oriente, its first name was San Juan de Nomativa, is an open-air museum, also known as "San Juan de losplatos" is a municipality of artisans par excellence, a trade passed down from generation to generation, they have specialized in make -in a unique way- the replica of pre-Columbian pottery, its pieces are admirable and have won national and international awards; reasons why the municipality was declared Cultural Patrimony of the Nation on August 21, 1989 together with the nine municipalities of the department of Masaya.

Here you will be able to appreciate a wide variety of artistic works made in the different workshops and pottery shops, with a wide range of decorative or utilitarian handicrafts, in bright colors and sober tones. It maintains a circuit market for all the workshops on its main avenue and in its streets where home is a workshop.

With streets adorned by handicraft workshops and a pleasant climate, San Juan de Oriente will welcome you.

The municipality is located south of the department of Masaya, 41 kilometers from the city of Managua. It limits to the north with Catarina, to the south with Diriá, to the east with the Support Lagoon and to the west with Niquinohomo.

The fundamental economic activity of the municipality is the elaboration and sale of handicrafts made of clay. 90% of the population is dedicated to artisan work.

Another important economic activity is agriculture in mixed orchards, with fruit and woody trees, coffee plantations and banana trees.

The main road network is a 2.5-kilometer stretch of asphalt road in good condition, being the main communication route with the most important cities and municipalities in the country.

Within the municipality there is not much collective transport, because the distances between the communities and the urban area are short of two to three kilometers.

San Juan de Oriente has electricity and drinking water service, a health center located 300 meters south from the main entrance, it also has primary and secondary education centers.

Local transport is the mototaxi that has become popular in recent years.

From Managua, at the bus terminals in the Roberto Huembes Market, you can board a transport unit that will go to Diriomo or Rivas and ask the driver to get you off at the municipality stop.

Another way to get there is by boarding the Masaya-Diriomo buses.

In a private vehicle, I drove towards Masaya when arriving at the Las Flores roundabout, turn right and continue until the Catarina roundabout, cross the roundabout and a few meters, on the right, is the main entrance of San Juan de Oriente.
