The Cruz del Río Grande, located in the basin of the Río Grande de Matagalpa, registers in its territory vestiges of the indigenous presence since time immemorial. A good part of the cultural expressions of the Ulwa people are preserved in their territory, giving a particular character to this deep area of the Caribbean Coast of Nicaragua.
It limits to the north the municipality of Prinzapolka (North Caribbean Autonomous Region), to the south with the municipality of El Tortuguero, to the east with the Desembocadura de La Cruz de Río Grande municipality and to the west with the municipality of Paiwas and the municipality of Siuna (Autonomous Region North Caribbean).

The main economic activity is based on small-scale agricultural production. The main crops are basic grains, tubers and musaceae, generally for self-consumption. The municipality is a producer of rice and cocoa for the production of artisan chocolate.

If you are traveling from Managua, at the El Mayoreo market terminal you take a bus bound for El Rama. At the Bluefields dock you will board a dinghy heading to the Cruz de Río Grande, they leave this city on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays, the duration of the trip is six hours.
You can also board means of transportation to La Cruz del Río Grande from the Wendelyn Vargas terminal.
If you travel by private vehicle from Managua you take the North Pan-American Highway, at the San Benito junction you must turn right and follow the road to El Rama. Arriving at El Rama you must follow the route explained above.
Another option for you to have a direct trip without worrying about finding boats that can take you, is to go to the Iván Montenegro market and at the bus terminal that travel to the Caribbean Coast, buy a ticket for the cost of the entire trip to Bluefields. The ticket includes the bus trip to The branch and the panga to Bluefields.
