Perlas Cays

The municipal seat, Laguna de Perlas, is a point where Creoles, Miskitos, Garífunas and Mestizos converge, giving it a unique multicultural and multilingual character that attracts its visitors.

About an hour from the coast, there are several Caribbean islands and good places to fish. On the mainland, there are beautiful rivers and impressive nature reserves. In addition, the indigenous communities that inhabit the area can be visited in their interesting traditional villages.

Laguna de Perlas is located 380 kilometers from Managua, the capital of Nicaragua, and 40 kilometers from Bluefields, the regional capital, by waterway. It limits to the north with Desembocadura de Río Grande and El Tortuguero, to the south with Kukra Hill, to the east with the Caribbean Sea and to the west with El Tortuguero and Kukra Hill.

The main productive activities are fishing and agriculture for self-consumption, mainly.

You can get to Pearl Lagoon by several routes or a combination of them: by air La Costeña offers flights to Bluefields from the domestic flight terminal. You must make the reservation and purchase tickets in advance to guarantee your seat, as they are in high demand and from there at the Bluefields municipal pier, look for a boat or panga with a direct destination to Laguna de Perlas (C$170.00 one way) or else one that goes to kukra hill, then you get on a bus (C$50.00 one way) headed to pearl lagoon.

The municipality of Laguna de Perlas is one hour from Bluefields. Several boats leave in the morning and it is easy to ride. The boat also passes through other towns such as Kukra Hill, which are on the way.

Almost all transportation in the area is done by boat, but since 2007 Laguna de Perlas is also accessible by land. There is a road from El Rama to Kukra Hill, which then continues to the main town. It takes about 7 hours to get there by road from Mangua by car. By public transportation, you must take a bus to El Rama at the Mercado Mayoreo terminal in Managua; Once in that destination, you must take another bus to Laguna de Perlas, which makes the connection in 3 hours.

If you travel by private vehicle from Managua, take the North Pan-American Highway to Juigalpa, then follow the signs to El Rama; shortly before arriving you will find a detour towards Laguna de Perlas. It is recommended to travel in a 4×4 vehicle.
